One of the things I really love to do at this time of year is to look out the best bird feeders I have, clean them all up and get them filled – lots of luscious nuts and berries out there.  I manage to attract many feathered friends throughout the year and I delight in hanging up the various feeding devices on the rather grand ornamental mini lamp post I originally bought as a present for my beloved mother in law.  When she became too immobile to go out to fill it, I rescued and now cherish it.  When we buy gifts for older folk, it is important to bear in mind how much effort will be needed by that person to use it – does it need taking in daily for refills, or is it going to need regular scrubbing out and refilling;  does the item need a regular change of batteries to make it work etc. etc.  These are now the kind of things that I look out for
